Potential for a biodegradable micro-irrigation system

CORDIS-JRC - Δευ, 13/01/2014 - 11:08

Micro-irrigation is a method of watering that delivers small quantities of water directly to the roots of crop plants. Scientists have made progress towards developing a non-toxic, biodegradable piping system for micro-irrigation purposes.

Ultrasound improves recycled plastics flow

CORDIS-JRC - Δευ, 13/01/2014 - 11:01

Recyclation of plastics has become increasingly common throughout the EU. Scientists have delivered monitoring and control technology to ensure that manufacturers can reliably use waste to manufacture other products.

Tailor-made bone biomaterials

CORDIS-JRC - Δευ, 13/01/2014 - 11:01

EU-funded scientists have developed novel simulation software geared toward bone implants and tissue engineering. Extracting mechanical properties from computed tomography (CT) data will enable physicians to plan surgeries specific to individual patients.

Creating a new generation of nano-biotechnologists

CORDIS-JRC - Δευ, 13/01/2014 - 11:00

Development of nanotechnology-based in vitro diagnostics offers the ability to solve important problems in global health care. This research requires collaboration between experts from different scientific disciplines and integration of bio-, nano- and microtechnologies.

Morphology of cellular organelles

CORDIS-JRC - Δευ, 13/01/2014 - 10:57

Visualisation of the fine structure of organelles in the cell is essential for understanding their associated functions. The architecture of organelles is highly dynamic and undergoes dramatic rearrangements in response to cellular changes like division or differentiation.

The hippocampus in memory and behaviour

CORDIS-JRC - Τρί, 07/01/2014 - 12:24

The role of brain structures such as the hippocampus and associated neural circuits in regulating anxiety and memory is still poorly understood. The EU-funded HIPPOPROJECTION project was initiated to elucidate their role in anxiety and memory regulation using mice models.

New hover vehicle for fast oil spill recovery

CORDIS-JRC - Τρί, 07/01/2014 - 12:23

Researchers have created an amphibious hovercraft able to respond quickly to oil spills and reduce the damage to coastlines and local economies. The cheap and efficient vehicle can reach areas that are inaccessible for conventional sea or land vehicles.

Lab-on-a-chip system for Lyme disease diagnosis

CORDIS-JRC - Τρί, 07/01/2014 - 12:22

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common tick-borne infection in Europe with over 85 000 new cases annually. Treatment is often delayed or inadequate due to misdiagnosis, resulting in painful and disabling symptoms.

Safe storage underground for greenhouse gas

CORDIS-JRC - Τρί, 07/01/2014 - 12:20

An EU-funded initiative is investigating the safe and permanent storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in basalt rocks. The aim of carbon sequestration is to mitigate climate change by preventing the release of large quantities of the greenhouse gas (GHG) into the Earth's atmosphere.

Space weather warning system

CORDIS-JRC - Τρί, 07/01/2014 - 12:19

Orbiting satellites and electrical grids on Earth are vulnerable to space weather in the form of high-energy particles coming from the Sun. An EU-funded initiative is developing an alert system to forecast these geomagnetic storms.

Preventing urinary tract infections

CORDIS-JRC - Τρί, 07/01/2014 - 12:13

Indwelling catheters are used to collect urine samples and assess urine output accurately in patients so as to decipher severity of illness or injury. About 80 % of urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur due to use of indwelling catheters, increasing length of stay in hospitals as well as health care costs.
