Boron-based building blocks for nanostructuring molecules

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:13

A number of complicated porous chemical structures have found great utility in gas separation and storage. Scientists developed a novel class of building blocks for such structures and demonstrated their utility.

Stopping malaria-producing parasites in their tracks

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:12

Malaria represents a global public health concern yet detailed knowledge of the life cycle of the parasites responsible is missing. Scientists are applying novel genetic methods for insight leading to targeted treatments.

All-round participation in city development and planning

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:10

The PARTES project is exploring potentialities in the environmental and community planning field thanks to the direct involvement of particular actors. These include university faculty, staff and students promoting social and economic development in long-term underdeveloped areas.

Improving the quality of commercial soil fungi

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:09

Symbiotic soil fungi have become an important part of sustainable agriculture, but commercially available fungi are of variable quality. A new research partnership has been set up to find genetic markers to produce a consistently high standard for the agricultural and other sectors.

Evaluating drug dose levels for children's anaemia

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:08

Beta-thalassaemia major, also called Cooley's anaemia, is a common genetic disorder that impairs haemoglobin production and affects about 60 000 children annually. Currently, transfusion therapy has to be coupled with iron chelation to remove excess iron accumulation from frequent transfusions and prevent potentially fatal multi-organ dysfunction.

Targeting human proteins to fight influenza infections

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:07

A European consortium is putting forward an interesting strategy for combatting influenza infections. By using inhibitors to human protein or RNA molecules vital for virus survival, researchers envision the disruption of viral replication.

Linking technology and changing driving patterns

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:06

How have in-vehicle technologies (IVTs) changed the ways we drive? Researchers have been assessing the impact that recent innovations, such as navigation, cruise control and hands-free communication, have on driving behaviour.

Linking up the world's coolest star students

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:05

Low-mass stars and brown dwarfs are, by celestial standards, very cool stars. An EU-supported network has brought together some of the world's leading experts studying these stellar objects to enable them to pool their knowledge and resources.

Cortex development during mammalian embryogenesis

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:04

European scientists investigated the mechanisms that control neuronal migration and distribution during mammalian embryogenesis. Through novel tools it was possible to visualise the migration of specific neuronal populations and identify Ebf3 as an important molecule in maintaining cortex organisation.

Starch breakdown at night linked to plant drought resistance

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:03

Plants that grow in dry conditions have several adaptation strategies to survive the lack of water, including carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake at night rather than during the day. A recent project investigated the underlying genetics of this system to better understand how it is regulated.

When light matters

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:02

Light–matter interactions are of great interest to scientists because they shed light on fundamental quantum effects. An EU-funded project is studying quasiparticles known as polaritons to improve our understanding of quantum phenomena.

Unifying theories of learning and dynamical systems

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:01

Researchers have taken a deterministic dynamical systems approach towards the fundamental development of the analysis of control and random dynamical systems. Backed by EU funding, work in this area led to the development of a common framework allowing for systematic interaction of the theories of learning and dynamical systems.

New weapons in the war against microbes

Πέμ, 31/10/2013 - 22:00

New antimicrobial compounds are needed as bacteria become resistant to currently available drugs. Addressing this pressing issue, the 'New antimicrobials' (NAM) project explored new sources and techniques for developing novel antimicrobials and mechanisms behind their actions.
