The Prices and Costs Division monitors, analyses and forecasts inflation in the euro area as a whole as well as in individual countries and sectors, and examines its cyclical and structural drivers. It also assesses inflationary pressures stemming from the external environment and domestic wage and profit developments, as well as the associated prospects, risks and uncertainties.
You will participate in the summer 2024 Research Graduate Programme within the Directorate General Research. The programme is intended for PhD students who have completed their coursework and are at the dissertation stage of their studies in economics, finance, statistics, mathematics or a related discipline. The successful candidates will work in one of the Directorate General’s two divisions – Monetary Policy Research or Financial Research.
The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) provides independent, evidence-based advice to policymakers, to help ensure full respect for fundamental rights across the EU, for everyone. To this end, the Agency collects and analyses information and data on a range of fundamental rights issues, provides assistance and expertise to EU Institutions and to EU Member States’ governments, raises rights awareness, communicates its findings and strengthens cooperation and ties between fundamental rights actors.
Traineeships at FRA
You will be part of the Production Section in the Directorate Banknotes. Our Directorate has approximately 70 members of staff working to ensure the integrity of euro banknotes as an efficient means of payment and to protect them against counterfeiting. In particular, we coordinate all activities relating to the development, production and circulation of banknotes, including those related to quality control both within the Eurosystem and with third parties.
You will be part of the Design and Digital Division in the Directorate General Communications. The Directorate General develops and implements the ECB’s digital communications strategy. We design, maintain and create audio/visual content for the ECB’s websites, devise communications solutions and produce digital publications.
You will be part of the Financial Research Division in the Directorate General Research. Our Division’s roughly 25 economists conduct policy-relevant research on financial and monetary economics. We cover topical issues such as macro-financial linkages, the interaction between monetary and financial stability policies, financial innovations like fintech and digital currencies, and the financial implications of climate change.
In your role as a PhD Student Research Assistant trainee, you will support the ECB’s new Research Task Force on Heterogeneity in Macroeconomics and Finance. The task force has been set up to help further our understanding of (i) how heterogeneity across households, firms and banks shapes the transmission of policy measures; and (ii) the uneven effects that policy measures have on different groups of economic agents.

You will be part of either the Monetary Policy Research Division or the Senior Management team in the Directorate General Research. Our Directorate General provides research-based policy analysis for the ECB’s decision-making bodies. We conduct and coordinate economic research on issues relating to monetary policy, financial stability and ECB Banking Supervision.
You will be part of the Governance and Transformation Services Division, which acts as a cross functional service platform under the management of the Chief Services Office (CSO). The CSO is responsible for more than 800 staff delivering internal services in the fields of administration, human resources, IT and finance.
You will be part of the Supply Side, Labour and Surveillance Division in the Directorate General Economics. Our Division has 36 staff providing analytical work which focuses on labour market developments, longer-term productivity trends and other factors driving economic growth and potential output in the euro area, including the role of innovation, digitalisation and policy responses to climate change. The team also conducts country surveillance and cross-country studies, contributes to the ESCB’s quarterly projections and looks into economic issues relating to EU governance and policies.
