Towards improved prognosis of chronic kidney disease

CORDIS-JRC - Παρ, 20/12/2013 - 10:18

A large European consortium is working to elucidate the aetiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD), formulate new diagnostic tools and design novel therapies. The main focus is concentrated on the impaired renal function associated with diabetes and hypertension, two of the biggest risk factors contributing to the development of CKD.

Protecting fruit from phytoplasma

CORDIS-JRC - Παρ, 20/12/2013 - 10:09

Phytoplasma are highly specialised intracellular bacterial pathogens that are transmitted by insects as they feed on the sap of plants. The pathogen infects many important crops, reducing both the quality and quantity of fruit harvests by interfering with the flowering and fruiting of infected orchards.

Sustainable, innovative forest use for Europe

CORDIS-JRC - Παρ, 20/12/2013 - 10:07

Munich – Europe has more than 117 million hectares of forest, but the sustainable utilisation especially in privately owned woods falls short of its potential. The ever-increasing demand for wood for material and energy applications is becoming more and more difficult to meet. In response, the EU project SIMWOOD (Sustainable Innovative Mobilisation of Wood) was recently launched with the aim of promoting a more efficient use of the available supply of wood and bolster Europe's forestry and wood industry. The EU is funding the project with about EUR 6 million over a four-year period.

Sphingolipids — understanding structure and function

Greek Researchers - Παρ, 20/12/2013 - 09:18

Sphingolipids are integral in maintaining our cell membrane structure and regulating metabolism and other key functions. Lipid deregulation can cause diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and Alzheimer's disease.

The EU-funded 'Systems biology of lipids metabolism' (SBLIME) project was initiated to characterise and investigate the molecular mechanisms of sphingolipids. Researchers employed a systems biology approach along with high-resolution chromatography and mass spectrometry for the analysis of global and lipid metabolism as well as biosynthesis pathways.
