An EU team examined algae derived wastes as potential non-petroleum sources for bioplastics, plus other organic waste products as filler components. Successful industrial application resulted in new compostable plastics for two product types: wipe pouches and agricultural bags.
Natural petroleum reserves, from which most plastics are derived, are expected to run out within 30 years. Hence finding renewable alternative source-materials for a new generation of plastics is of the utmost importance.
