An EU team studied the chemical and physical composition of corals' mucus layer. Two kingdoms of microbes respond to the variation in characteristic ways, illustrating previously unknown evolutionary relationships among coral groups.
Mucus is important to the interaction of animals with their environments. The substance also plays a role in animal immunity, both as a defensive layer and as a nutrient medium for protective microorganisms.
