To overcome the scientific isolation and remoteness of Reunion Island, the EU funded an initiative for strengthening local research on emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) through capacity building. It supported medical and veterinary teams, ecologists, life science researchers and experts in social sciences, enabling the island to become a centre of excellence for the region.
The aim of the RUN-EMERGE (Supporting the research potential on emerging infectious diseases in La Réunion Island, an EU outermost region in the South-Western Indian Ocean) project was to help the University of La Reunion become a focus for EID research.
