The FIPS project aims to make supercomputers 30 % more energy efficient, and more powerful at the same time, thus opening them up to a wide range of new applications and users.
Modern society is becoming increasingly dependent, not just on consumer electronics goods such as smartphones, but also on massive calculations performed by ever-faster supercomputers. Be it weather forecasting or manufacturing the perfect wind turbine or fuel-efficient car, huge supercomputer systems, comprising thousands of smaller computers, are needed to cope with the highly complex tasks required.
