Luminescent materials and their capacity to transform invisible forms of energy into visible light are used in a broad range of applications, from smartphones to X-rays. An EU initiative is further developing this growing area by training young scientists.
With use of skyrocketing during the past decade, the European Commission considers luminescent materials a key enabling technology. Europe is a market leader in the development of luminescent materials and associated devices. However, the unmet demand for skilled scientists may jeopardise its competitive advantage.
