People living near the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site (SNTS) in Kazakhstan were exposed to radioactive contamination in the soil and air from the fallout. This population could prove valuable for studying the effects of exposure to ionising radiation.
A large population around the SNTS was exposed to varying doses of moderate to low ionising radiation. Until now, a limited number of studies tried to assess possible health effects in this population but results were conflicting, possibly due to differences in dosimetric methods and selection of control groups.
