Lung cancer ranks amongst the top causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. European researchers worked on a novel airway stent that is expected to revolutionise the treatment of lung cancer.
Lung cancer causes airway stenosis, which does not only affect the patients’ quality of life but also leads to premature death. To tackle this problem, clinicians utilise endobronchial stents to hold a patient’s airway open and restore breathing. However, massive mucus retention or re-occlusion due to tumour ingrowths are the major drawbacks associated with endobronchial stenting.
