An EU project is developing superior blades for coastal wind turbines involving new composites and coatings. After selection of candidate materials, a prototype design has been successfully tested, yielding a simulation model for a larger version.
Offshore wind farms are a promising form of renewable energy; however, the large mechanical forces and corrosive conditions shorten turbine blade life. New designs and materials may improve matters.
