European solar energy strategy

EU funding is enabling administrative support and coordination among all relevant stakeholders in solar energy to make the EU a world leader in the field.

In an effort to enhance energy security and reduce harmful emissions that negatively impact the global climate, the EU is committed to meeting 20 % of energy demand with renewable resources by 2020. Photovoltaic (PV) technology, using the Sun's energy to produce electric current, is poised to make a significant contribution to the EU's 20-20-20 goals and, in this context, the Solar Europe Industry Initiative (SEII) has set ambitious targets.

The mission of the European Photovoltaic Technology Platform (EU PV TP) is to develop a strategy and implementation roadmap for education, research and development (R&D), and market deployment of PV solar energy. A previous project, PV SEC, established the Secretariat of the EU PV TP. In order to continue support for all stakeholders and ensure effective cooperation between the PV industry and the EU PV TP, the EU-funded project PV TP-SEC is picking up where PV SEC left off.

Four working groups (WGs) of the EU PV TP cover specific issues related to policies, market deployment, technology and developing countries. Within the first 12 months, PV TP-SEC provided administrative activities that are now helping to keep WGs on target with deadlines and also assist in budget management.

The consortium has developed and maintained vital communication tools in the information technology (IT) realm for both internal and external sharing of information. The new project website highlights results achieved and sports an intranet component for members. Press releases and easy-to-understand 'PV fact sheets' distributed at various events are promoting wider recognition of the network's accomplishments.

Around 180 stakeholders from industry, research, as well as investment and political circles registered for the biggest event yet organised by the EU PV TP, the fifth meeting of the General Assembly. Featured was a speech on the SEII by Bruno Schmitz, Head of Unit, Directorate-General (DG) Research.

PV TP-SEC is expected to enhance R&D and contribute to rapid deployment of cost-competitive and world-class European PV technology. Aligning academic research with industrial priorities through a recognised point of reference for key decision makers, PV TP-SEC can contribute to the achievement of EU goals and enhanced competitiveness in the field of solar energy.
