The APPTOTAU project has investigated the mechanisms behind Tau pathology, a precursor of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). They found that the impact of efavirenz – one of the medications used to treat HIV – on brain cholesterol levels could make it an effective drug against AD.
Patients with AD all share a common trait: the accumulation of amyloid-beta protein plaques in the brain. But scientists’ attempts to prevent or remove amyloid in AD-patients’ brain have so far failed to cure the disease.
