A damaged heart repairs itself by synthesising scar tissue which leads to functional deterioration. The search is on to try and find a way to improve cardiac regeneration that permits the heart to function without related impact.
Stem cell therapies, material-based approaches – all are being harnessed in the bid to find ways of making heart tissue regeneration less damaging. But success so far has been limited by the lack of detailed knowledge concerning the mechanisms behind regeneration and the technology to guide the regenerative process.
