Carbon fibre reinforced composites (CFRC) are 80 % lighter than steel and 50 % lighter than aluminium, while delivering at least twice the strength and stiffness. NEWSPEC set out to overcome the cost and safety barriers to their widespread adoption.
Despite being typically only 5–10 micrometers in diameter, carbon fibres (CFs) have many desirable properties such as high stiffness and strength, coupled with low weight and high tolerance to temperatures. This makes them of interest to the aerospace, civil engineering and military industries.
