Over the past years, the injudicious use of antibiotics has dramatically increased the emergence of drug resistance. To address this, concerted research efforts towards novel interventions are needed.
According to European health authorities, multi-drug resistant gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) infections resulted in thousands of deaths and millions of hospitalisations. Currently, there is a striking lack of new antimicrobial agents and no new agents are expected on the market in the short term. As a result, there is an imminent need for effective measures to contain resistance and limit the spread of MDR-GNB.
