The Black Sea boasts a rich ecosystem that has been under threat in recent decades due to industrial development and overfishing. A new network of cooperation around the Black Sea promises to address this serious issue.
A few years ago, the EU established a Black Sea scientific network of leading environmental and socioeconomic research institutes, universities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), thus creating a climate for outstanding research collaboration. Building on the BLACKSEASCENE initiative, the more recent EU-funded project UP-GRADE BS-SCENE (Upgrade Black Sea scientific network) strengthened collaborating organisations and added more key institutes to the network.
