An EU team examined Nordic research coordination as a potential model for the EU and the European Research Area (ERA). The project established a new collaboration body, and showed that Nordic collaboration occurs within a strong framework of trust and uses simplified funding.
The five Nordic countries have a long history of effective cooperation and integration, particularly in research. Yet, the style of the cooperation is bottom-up, whereby many initiatives originate from the research community, in contrast to the EU's top-down and policy-driven approach.
