Many high-precision components in the aerospace and surgical sectors require very smooth surfaces and specifications are increasingly stringent. New tool monitoring technology enables machine operators to detect tool wear and potentially catastrophic conditions, thereby significantly decreasing the negative impact of tool degradation on surface quality.
Thanks to advances in computer numerical control (CNC) technology, surface tolerances of 1 μm are now possible. However, tool degradation makes it difficult to maintain that level of smoothness. In fact, it is the most important factor affecting the accuracy and surface finish of machined parts.
