JRC researchers improve the methodology for the analysis of cross section measurements at a cold neutron beam

Τετ, 18/11/2015 - 20:24

In close collaboration with international nuclear research organisations, scientists from the JRC described a method to improve the analysis of cross section measurements at a cold neutron beam. This work is part of the JRC contribution to improve the accuracy of nuclear data, which are important for the development of innovative reactor systems.

Treating opportunistic fungal infections

Τετ, 18/11/2015 - 15:37

A patient having AIDs or undergoing chemotherapy has a compromised immune system and is very vulnerable, particularly to multi-drug–resistant fungi. As most anti-fungal drugs are severely toxic there is a large gap in a world market worth USD 4 billion annually.

Cancer therapies from marine fungi

Τετ, 18/11/2015 - 15:33

Marine fungi produce secondary metabolites that have medicinal value for humans. The EU-funded project MARINE FUNGI worked to develop sustainable methods for commercial exploitation of marine fungi in cancer treatment.

Promoting health through pigs at play

Τετ, 18/11/2015 - 15:32

Researchers have investigated play behaviour in pigs as a way to measure overall livestock animal welfare.

Play behaviour is believed to be a good indicator of animal welfare since it is an indication of the pleasure that animals experience when they are relaxed. There is, however, little information available on play behaviour in animal production systems.

Diabetes – Malfunctioning brown fat and pancreatic beta cells

Τετ, 18/11/2015 - 15:30

The dysfunction of pancreatic beta cells and brown adipose tissue (BAT) occurring in diabetes results from defective signal transduction and organelle function. A European initiative is identifying the molecular mechanisms involved and the cross talk between these two key tissues.

Harmonising research through Joint Programming Initiatives

Τετ, 18/11/2015 - 15:22

The Member States and the European Council have developed a set of 10 Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) to overcome the fragmentation of research activities, programmes and policies across Europe. Since the JPIs involve different institutions from different countries with different procedures, there is a need for framework conditions (FCs) facilitating harmonised planning and implementation.

Robots to automate detection of cracks

Τετ, 18/11/2015 - 15:20

Crack detection in complex parts has hitherto been a manual task using magnetic particle inspection. An EU-funded project combined robotics and thermography to replace this decade-old method.

Within the scope of the EU-funded project THERMOBOT (Autonomous robotic system for thermo-graphic detection of cracks), scientists developed a new automated inspection process exploiting thermography for crack detection.

Reducing pollutants from ship exhausts

Τετ, 18/11/2015 - 15:17

Engine exhaust from ships is one of the most pervasive pollutants in the world today. An EU initiative built a device that can remove gases and particles from diesel exhaust.

Ships use a type of low-cost diesel that is high in sulphur and other pollutants. In 2010, the International Maritime Organization put into place strict regulations on ship emissions to limit this major source of air pollution.
